Off Topic: Building a Compelling Career

To advance in your career, you may need more than a 9-to-5 job for a few reasons. , such jobs offer a fixed salary and limited chances for progression. The business world is competitive and fast-paced, which demands going beyond the regular 9-to-5 workday to keep up and stay ahead. This can entail starting a side business, freelancing, or developing a new product or service. Although a 9-to-5 job provides stability and a steady income, you may need more effort to advance your career.

To improve your skills, deliberate practice requires focus and concentration. This means being intentional and not going through the motions. Money is a measure of value, so aiming to make money means being valuable. Suppose you can't find evidence to support a task; move on to something else. To find a fulfilling career, you must master rare and valuable skills and use them to create something that sets you apart. Pursuing more control without practical skills is a mirage. You must also stay up-to-date with new ideas in your field and be dedicated to brainstorming. Exposure to new ideas is critical to staying competitive.

Keep track of the hours spent each month dedicated to researching research problems. Adopting the craftsman mindset is essential to build a compelling career, regardless of how you feel about your job. Why should we settle for living up to other people's models of success? With career capital, control is sustainable. You must improve your skills before expecting quality work. Instead of aiming to make money, strive to be valuable.

Instead of focusing on finding the perfect job, focus on working. A successful career often results from a complex process that goes beyond following your passion. The most content and enthusiastic employees have spent ample time honing their skills. I keep track of the hours spent each month on research to help improve my performance. No matter how you feel about your job, adopting a craftsman mindset will be the foundation for a successful career.

According to basic economic theory, if you want something valuable, you must have something worthwhile to offer. Why do we continue to follow other people's paths to success? Hard work won't help you improve your performance beyond a certain point. It's essential to identify the type of capital market you're in, your capital type, and your definition of "good." Stretching and challenging yourself is crucial for growth, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. The deliberate practice may only sometimes be enjoyable, as it often requires doing things we're not already good at.

Current Work: Driving Business Value with Domain-Driven Design

The best justification for using any technology or technique is to provide value to the business. Developing software delivering actual business value differs from developing ordinary business software. Use DDD to model a complex domain in the simplest possible way. Never use DDD to make your solution more difficult. Most developers have had to change how they think about applying DDD. We, developers, are technical thinkers. Technical solutions come for us. It's not that thinking is terrible. It's that there are times when thinking less is better.
