Unrelated: The Path to Meaningful Connections
The more we work with no real purpose, the less engaged and motivated we are. The less engaged we are, the less likely we are to find and create Great Work. Ask one question at a time. There’s a place for small talk. An almost fail-safe way to start a chat that turns into a real conversation is the question, “What’s on your mind?” It’s a Goldilocks question, walking a fine line so it is neither too open and broad nor too narrow and confining.
Coaching for performance is about addressing and fixing a specific problem or challenge. It’s putting out the fire or building up the fire, or banking the fire. Coaching for development is about turning the focus from the issue to the person dealing with the problem, the person managing the fire.
Lead with presence; begin a conversation with awareness. Return to and strive to maintain that awareness. And be honest with oneself about what’s happening. Lead with presence to make any conversation mindful. Awareness is the primary foundation for all communication.
Mindful communication creates understanding through awareness. Mindful communication implies being present. Effective communication depends on presence. To say what we mean, we must first know what we mean. We must listen and discern what’s true to understand what we mean.
Presence lays the ground for connection. Presence is our natural state. Presence lays the foundation for the relationship. Increasing our capacity for presence begins with identifying our strengths and any areas we may need to develop. The more aware we are, the more choice we have. Mindful communication focuses on what matters. The foundation for communication start at the individual level. It comes from curiosity and care.
